Special Olympics Louisiana is hosting its third annual Camp Shriver in Destrehan on June 21, 22 and 23. Camp Shriver provides the opportunity for those with and without intellectual disabilities to compete on teams together in various sports. The primary goal is to provide another level of challenge for athletes with disabilities and promote equality and inclusion. The camp will be social as well as athletic, and campers come from public and private schools, volunteer agencies and the local community.
WHO: Persons with and without intellectual disabilities ages 8-99.
WHAT: Camp Shriver is a place for people with intellectual disabilities and those without (unified partners) to learn new sports skills and improve individual sport performance, participate in team sports, build friendships and have fun.
WHEN: For volunteers: 8 a.m. June 21, 22 and 23. For participants: 9 a.m. June 21, 22 and 23.
TIME: Sports training and competition, 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesday.
EXTRA: Lunch will be provided and “Healthy Athletes” will offer special smiles on Wednesday.
TARGET SPORTS: Bocce, soccer, softball/t-ball, tennis and flag football.
Volunteers are needed. A training session will be held at 8:30 Tuesday for volunteers. Registration forms can be found on the St. Charles Parish website at stcharlesparish-la.gov under the Parks and Recreation Department.

Special Olympics Louisiana is a statewide organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion among people with and without intellectual disabilities.
